For Students: Key Information about UC Davis Canvas for Fall 2016

Basic setup for this fall

  • UC Davis Canvas support is open 24 hours every day at 844-303-8285. For help via chat, log in at https://canvas.ucdavis.edu, then go to “help” and click on “Chat with Canvas Support”
  • You will likely use both UC Davis Canvas and SmartSite this year, depending on which system your instructors choose. Ask your instructor or TA if you don’t know which system your class is using
  • In UC Davis Canvas, you can see your course once your instructor publishes it
  • As with SmartSite, you should expect to have access to your Canvas courses within about 18 hours from when you enroll in the course (or no longer have access if you’re dropping the class). This is the same as in SmartSite
  • Joey Van Buskirk is writing a student-to-student blog this fall about using UC Davis Canvas. Just Google his name and “UC Davis Canvas.” His first September entry talked about the Canvas app

Looking ahead

  • SmartSite will be available for use in instruction through spring term 2017
  • Course shells for fall courses now exist in UC Davis Canvas. Course shells and rosters will be available for instructors:
    • October 1 for winter term classes
    • November 1 for spring classes
    • March 1, 2017, for fall 2017 classes

Remember, though, you can’t see the course site until your instructor publishes it

Because of the high level of campus interest in adopting UC Davis Canvas for instruction this fall, the Move to Canvas project is holding off on creating project (or “non-course”) sites for now. This allows us to focus on introducing and supporting course sites. We will begin addressing requests that involve non-course sites no later than winter quarter. SmartSite remains useful for non-course sites for the rest of 2016-17
